If you happen to be in Malaga in August, don’t forget visiting the famous Malaga summer fair, one of the biggest street fairs of the country, starting on the second half of this month.

This year 2009 the fair starts on the night of Friday, August 14th and it lasts until August 23rd.

Before midnight, thousands of people will gather in the Malagueta to listen to the "Fair’s Proclamation " officially inaugurating the fair.

At 12 p.m. o’ clock an explosive opener is provided in the form of a firework display, best seen from the port area and the artistic lighting is inaugurated in the Paseo del Parque.

The fiery people of Malaga choose the hottest month of the year for their liveliest street party, a 10-day extravaganza of flamenco and ´fino´ (dry sherry) commemorating the Christian victory over the Moors in 1487. They celebrate in this occasion the incorporation of Malaga to the Kingdom of Castilla under the Catholic Monarchs, Don Fernando and Doña Isabel, as they entered the city on August 19, 1487 to reconquer Malaga. As a result of that battle, the image of the Virgin of the Victory was recovered and given back to the city of Malaga.
