Antequera

World Heritage

The city of Antequera is located at the crossroads of Andalusia, in the geographical center of the community. Its privileged situation has placed Antequera in practically all the historical passages of Andalusia.

A large sample of this gives the broad legacy that Romans, Arabs and Christians have left in the city, where Christian buildings such as the Royal Collegiate Church of Santa María La Mayor and numerous churches, convents and chapels throughout the city are intermingled in perfect harmony, others of Muslim origin like the Alcazaba de Antequera and a good number of Monumental Gates of different historical epochs. Special mention deserves its palatial architecture that is preserved in the city among which stands out the Palace of the Marquises of the Peña de los Enamorados, the Palace of Nájera or the Palace of the Marquis of Escalonias among others.

World Heritage

Along with its magnificent cultural heritage, the city has a gift of nature, the ‘Torcal de Antequera’ Natural Park, recently declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is a unique geological set that show a limestone relief of impressive structure where nature has created amazing figures. Famous is the Torcal Screw, one of the most characteristic and original forms of this karst landscape that due to its popularity has become a symbol of the Torcal de Antequera.

Antequera is also one of the greatest exponents of prehistoric megalithic in Europe thanks to the discovery of the Dolmens of Antequera Archaeological Ensemble, declared by Unesco World Heritage. Formed by the dolmens of Menga, Viera and El Romeral, this site receives thousands of visitors each year interested in knowing one of the first architectural forms of Prehistory with an age of about 6,500 years.
